SPECIAL ISSUE OF IPOTESI: BRAZIL AND ITS TRANSLATORS
Call for papers

This special issue of the refereed journal Ipotesi invites original scholarly contributions in Portuguese, Spanish or English which, with Brazil as a reference, will analyse the engagement of creative writers, poets or filmmakers in the translation of literary texts. Contributions will feature:

1. The notable phenomenon of major Brazilian writers and poets cum literary translators (eg Machado de Assis, Manoel Bandeira, Haroldo and Augusto de Campos) and its increasingly visible gender dimension (eg, Raquel de Queiroz, Lya Luft): the impact of their creative writing on the translations and, conversely, the impact of translating on their creative writing; the impact of their notoriety on the reception and avatars of foreign literatures in Brazil; their role in canon formation; the productivity of the gender category in the analysis of the various prisms of the phenomenon.

2. The reverse phenomenon: non-Brazilian creative writers and poets who translate Brazilian literature (eg Elizabeth Bishop, Edwin Muir, Thomas Burns); their impact on the dissemination of Brazilian literature and canon formation; asymmetries across national borders; the collateral role of Brazilian creative writers living abroad as translators/self-translators/disseminators of Brazilian literature (eg, diplomat João Almino, exile Ferreira Gullar, academics Ricardo Sternberg and Vera Lúcia de Oliveira, translator Natan Barreto).

3. Intersemiotic translations of Brazilian literature: strategies used by filmmakers to transpose Brazilian literature to another semiotic system; gender dimensions; controversies arising from the greater national and international exposure achieved by Brazilian literature via the screen.
